A Newry company is investing more than £2.1 million to acquire and expand a division of a leading local environmental services business. Terra Solutions has acquired the specialist drilling and tunneling operation of Newry-based McAllister Brothers Limited - which provides specialist services to the water, drainage, gas, oil and telecommunications industries - and is investing in a new purpose-built facility at Newry’s Carnbane Business Park.

The investment, which is expected to lead to around eight new jobs in Newry and 14 overseas over the course of the next 12 months, is being supported by Ulster Bank.

Barry and Michael McAllister were previously both directors and shareholders of McAllister Brothers before setting up Terra Solutions.

Ulster Bank’s Newry Business Centre Manager, Damian Milligan, says: “Terra Solutions specialises in tunneling and pipejacking for the laying of water, gas, sewerage, drainage and oil pipelines as well as for laying telecommunications cables. Following the acquisition it is investing in a new, state-of-the-art facility in Newry, which will provide a base for the company.”

“The company now has a strong presence in the UK and in particular Greater and Central London. It also has a growing presence in Kuwait and other Gulf states including Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In addition it is in the process of growing its share of the market in the Republic of Ireland.”

“In addition to its existing contracts in the UK and the Middle East, the company has just won a significant amount of business with the Irish government, including a joint venture with Dublin based SIAC Construction for the laying of pipelines at Dublin Bay.

“Barry and Michael have vast experience of this sector. With the existing and new contracts in place and planned technological investment within the company in 2009, we are confident the business is very well placed for continuing growth.” he adds.

In addition to the owners, the new company maintains a young and dynamic management team with contracts manager Robert McGoran and office manager Sharon Stewart.
