Home Sweet Home? Not for one in ten motorists!

One in ten motorists spend more time in their cars than at home, according to a new study by car insurance specialist Admiral.

The survey of 3,000 people has revealed that for many of us, the car is the place where we spend most of our time. And the figure varies depending on where in the UK you live. One in five London motorists find themselves on the road more than at home, compared to around one in ten in Scotland and just one in 25 in Wales.

It also seems that as a nation, we’re seeking some alone time in our cars, with 62% of us preferring to drive on our own rather than with passengers. The survey found that Scottish motorists are most likely to enjoy some solitude in their car, with 67% favouring to drive without any passengers. At the other end of the scale, a sociable 48% of drivers in Northern Ireland prefer some company on their travels.

Admiral managing director, Sue Longthorn, commented, “Drivers could be finding themselves spending so much time in the car because they have a long commute, or thanks to congestion on the UK’s busy roads. However, in a world where social networking and being constantly available are so valued, it might be that motorists are also seeking some solace in their cars.”

Interestingly, the study also revealed that men are three times more likely than women to spend more time in their car than in their .

Sue continued, “Perhaps men are taking some time out on the road to relax and get away from pressures at home. However, overall it’s a sad reflection that people are spending so much time away from their friends and family, whether by choice or not.”
